Koskisen starts regional soil and water investigations

In the decision by the Supreme Administrative Court in March Koskisen was released from direct cleaning obligations of the soil of Kärkölä's urban area. Koskisen has started the further clarifications and drawing up the investigation plans ordered by the Supreme Administrative Court in good co-operation with the Häme Environmental Centre and Kärkölä commune.

The decision of the Supreme Administrative Court obligated Koskisen Oy to draw up an investigation plan to clarify the extent of the area polluted by the wood protective liquids and glue waste as well as to determine the contents of detrimental elements in the soil. In addition, the Supreme Administrative Court obligated Koskisen to make further investigations concerning the cleaning need of groundwater and the sediments of Pyhäoja and Valkjärvi.

Koskisen is obligated to make the investigations and clarification using an external expert. Koskisen has selected Pöyry Environment Oy as the external expert. Risto Valo, the leading environmental expert at Pöyry, is in charge of the clarification and investigation work. According to preliminary plans, the investigations start during the spring by examining the working condition of the old groundwater pipes and bringing them into working condition. Samples of the soil, groundwater and sediments will be taken from 30 places in the urban area of Kärkölä centre and other areas determined separately. The results and reports of the investigations will be ready next Autumn after which the need for further actions will be estimated.
