OUR GOAL IS TO REDUCE WASTE AND MINIMISE LANDFILL WASTE

In order to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill, we sort our waste with care. The benefits of waste sorting are not only environmental but also economical: it is twice as expensive to process landfill waste than it is to process energy waste and other similar fractions. We employ a separate collection scheme for several reusable and recyclable waste fractions, such as cardboard, paper and metal as well as waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Company-level target

Energy waste should account for at least 50 per cent of the total amount of landfill and energy waste produced by our operations.

Outcome in 2017

In our Kärkölä and Vierumäki facilities, energy waste accounted for 40.2% of the total amount of landfill and energy waste produced, which means that the result improved slightly from the previous year.

Outcome in 2018

In our Kärkölä and Vierumäki facilities, energy waste accounted for 39.1% of the total amount of landfill and energy waste produced, which means that the result is slightly worse than previous year but better than 2014-2016.

Practical measures for reducing hazardous waste

The hazardous waste produced by our operations is delivered to a plant operated by Fortum in Riihimäki for appropriate processing. The fractions classified as hazardous generated by our operations include waste adhesive, waste oil, fluorescent bulbs and batteries.

Practical measures for reducing waste

We make every effort to ensure that our production waste is either recycled or reused whenever possible. We constantly monitor the amount of waste produced and take measures to reduce the amount of landfill waste associated with our production. As a testament to this, we participate in Commitment 2050, a sustainable development initiative organised by the Ministry of the Environment.

Koskisen Oy, Sitoumus2050.fi (see English version)

Our large investments in energy production and minimising its emissions have had a huge effect on the company’s total emissions. Thanks to Koskisen’s own bio power plant, the amount of thermal energy derived from biofuel that Koskisen uses has grown during the 21st century from 74 percent to over 90 percent.

Most of our products and packaging materials are recyclable. We also take care of the environmental friendliness of our products and are at the front line in implementing international treaties.
